Joe Schoen: Giants will 'look under every rock' to find quarterback, open to drafting one and adding veteran - chof 360 news

The 2025 NFL Draft is two months away, and this week’s Scouting Combine in Indianapolis represents a major step in the draft process.

The Giants head into the draft owning the No. 3 overall pick, and it’s clear that whether they use that first round pick on a quarterback or not, that position is top of mind for general manager Joe Schoen and his staff.

After moving on from Daniel Jones, the Giants head into the offseason with basically a clean slate at the QB position, with Tommy DeVito the only quarterback currently on the roster.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Schoen made it clear that the Giants are focused on finding their next franchise quarterback, whether that’s through the draft or by adding a veteran --- or even both, perhaps.

“Where we are, Tommy DeVito is our only quarterback on the roster, so you may evaluate both of those (signing a veteran and drafting a quarterback). Both may be options.,” Schoen said. “Again, we don’t know what’s going to happen in the draft. We don’t know who’s going to be there. When we get around these kids, they may or may not be a fit for us. We’re going to have to address the position somewhere. Even if you get a young quarterback, you’d like to have a vet in the room with him to be in the room with him and show him the ropes, how to be a pro.

“We’re going to look at vets, we’re going to look at the draft, we’re going to look at trade candidates. We’re going to look under every rock to find the best quarterback for us going into the 2025 season.”

One of those veterans who could potentially be on the move is Matthew Stafford, as the Rams have reportedly given him permission to speak with other teams to determine his market value -- a move that could be a precursor to an eventual trade.

When asked about Stafford, Schoen could only give a non-answer, given Stafford is still under contract with Los Angeles.

“You’ll have to ask the Rams that,” Schoen said. “You can get that from the Rams and let them talk about that. He’s under contract with the Rams.”

Meanwhile, on the draft side, Schoen said that he's “okay” with draft prospects not throwing at the Combine. Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, considered one of the top quarterbacks in this class, has announced that he will only throw at his pro day, a move that doesn’t bother Schoen in the slightest.

“To me, you’ve never thrown to these receivers before. … If they throw [at the Combine] that’s great. I’m never going to downgrade them for not throwing, and then if they don’t have a great throwing session, I’m not going to downgrade them for that either because they’ve never thrown to these guys,” Schoen said. “It’s timing, it’s anticipation, it’s the type of routes that guys run, their ability to run certain routes.

“If a guy decides he doesn’t want to throw and he wants to throw at his pro day, I’m okay with that. My staff’s done a lot of work on the quarterbacks, so we’ve seen all of these guys throw multiple times, whether it’s practice or games.”

It’s clear that the Giants have plenty of avenues to explore when it comes to finding a new quarterback, and Schoen said that the team is “open to everything” when it comes to moving up from, or even moving back from, that No. 3 pick.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how the Giants land their next quarterback. It simply matters that they get better play out of that position in 2025 and beyond.

“I’ve said it to you guys before, I think it’s the most important position in football, and we have one on our roster right now,” Schoen explained. “I think it’s important, wherever we address it, the play has to be better than what it’s been. Because of injuries we played four quarterbacks this year. We played three last year, so it would be nice to have one guy out there who gives you the best chance to win games and also stay healthy.

“Again, that is an important position, and we need better play out of that position than what we’ve had, and that will really help us.”
